Safety Culture System Assessment

What is “Safety Culture”?

“Safety Culture” may be thought of as what people in your organization say to one another and what they do related to safety. Both peers and leaders influence employee and management actions that contribute to the success of your safety initiatives and prevent injuries. These variables are rarely written down; they are the unspoken rules, expectations, and values of employees and management.

World class safety cultures requires two things, safety systems that actively engage employees and world class safety leadership. The things leaders do and say create your safety culture which in turn either supports or discourages employee involvement in your safety improvement initiatives. Without the right leadership support, eventually you hit a wall—progress slows down, employees’ engagement in safety decreases, incidents increase.

What is Your Safety Culture?

  • Do you have the right leadership support?
  • How do your employees perceive your safety culture and leadership support?
  • Do the informal relationships in your organization, encourage, or discourage safety?

Do you have a clear understanding of your safety culture? If not, we can help! Quality Safety Edge’s Safety Culture Assessment evaluates your formal and information safety culture through:

  • Document Review: The formal safety management systems influencing your safety performance will be reviewed by conducting a document and procedure examination. This will help Quality Safety Edge understand the existing formal processes and how they are expected to function.
  • Safety Culture Survey: Quality Safety Edge’s Safety Culture Survey measures the health of your safety management system and determines how your safety systems and leadership support are viewed by people at all levels of your organization. The survey provides a metric on how employees are engaged in your safety efforts and the safety leadership practices that build and support a high level of employee engagement. It determines the critical behaviors that will strengthen your safety leadership and help you achieve an injury-free workplace.
  • Safety Culture Onsite Assessment: “Safety Culture” may be thought of as the informal safety system. Planning for improvements in safety performance requires a thorough understanding of all variables influencing employee and management actions that prevent or contribute to incidents, injuries, and illnesses. These factors are rarely written down; they are the unspoken rules, expectations, and values of employees and management. Quality Safety Edge will systematically assess these influences using structured interviews, focus groups, and meeting observation.
