Leadership support is essential to the success of any Behavioral Safety process. Many management teams elect to publish and post prominently Leadership Commitment Statements. These statements affirm to the employees that leaders understand the essential features of the process and publicly commit to supporting it. Here are some sample statements you might find useful.

Behavior Based Safety (BBS) Program
Leadership Commitment Statement

Safety is the number one priority at COMPANY. Therefore we, as leaders and managers of COMPANY, are committed to supporting this important employee-run program. We hereby agree that:

1. BBS is an employee-driven program. The leadership of COMPANY will support this effort.

2. Participation in the BBS program is purely voluntary.

3. The program is completely anonymous. No names will be recorded on the observations.

4. We will provide the time and resources needed to properly train observers.

5. The BBS Steering Committee has the authority to change the program as needed.

6. Managers will assist in coordinating the resources needed to support the program.

7. The Executive Team will provide the necessary financial resources to support the program.

Sample Two

COMPANY Leadership Commitment Statement

Leadership commitment is essential to the success of this employee-managed process.

1. This is an employee-driven process. Managers and supervisors will support it.

2. Information gathered through observations will be used to create a safe jobsite and not for disciplinary action.

3. Names of employees observed will not be recorded on the observation checklist.

4. All employees will receive training to conduct observations and provide feedback.

5. Conducting observations is voluntary and will be recognized.

Signatures: Onsite management or anyone with disciplinary power over onsite employees

COMPANY BBS Leadership Commitment Statement

We commit to the following for BBS Observations:

Employees will receive immediate feedback on observations. They will be encouraged to look at the checklist.

Observations are anonymous - names will not be recorded on the checklist.

Information recorded on the checklist will not be used as a basis for disciplinary action.

Supervisors & managers will not be evaluated on the basis of "percent safe" in their areas.

Supervisors & managers will be evaluated on their participation in, & support for, BBS.

All employees are encouraged to participate in BBS.

All employees will receive training on BBS before being asked to participate.

Signatures: Appropriate company, division, and department management for each department

COMPANY
Behaviour Based Safety
Leadership Commitment Statement

We commit to the following principles for the conduct of our Behaviour Based Safety Process.

1. Names of staff observed will not be recorded during observation & feedback sessions. The Behaviour Based Safety Process is anonymous.

2. No disciplinary action will be taken as a result of the observation process.

3. Supervisors & managers will not be evaluated on the basis of safety performance recorded during observations in their areas.

4. Supervisors & managers will be evaluated on the basis of how well they support the Behaviour Based Safety Process, such as providing time for observations, goal setting, group feedback, & Local Area Team meetings, & resources such as data entry staff, execution of Local Area Team recommended interventions, & group celebrations.

5. Everyone will be encouraged to voluntarily participate in the process. Participation as an observer & as an observee is voluntary.

6. All staff will receive training in the Behaviour Based Safety Process before being asked to conduct observations & feedback. Newly hired & transferring staff will be trained in the facility process.

7. Observations & feedback will be conducted according to the guidelines. Staff will receive immediate feedback on the observations. They will also be allowed to see the observation sheet & to ask questions.

We, the supervisors & managers of COMPANY, commit to the following principles for the conduct of our Values Based Safety Process.

1.Names of associates, supervisors, and managers observed will not be recorded during coaching sessions.

2.Information recorded on the checklists will not be used as a basis for disciplinary action.

3.Supervisors & managers will not be evaluated on the basis of safety performance recorded during observations in their areas.

4.Supervisors & managers will be evaluated on the basis of how well they support the Values Based Safety Process.

5.All are encouraged to participate in the process.

6.All will receive training in the Values Based Safety Process before being asked to conduct coaching.

7.Associates will receive immediate feedback on the observations. They will also be allowed to see the checklist & to ask questions.
