Quality Safety Edge celebrates the Safety Champions who have helped their companies create worldclass behavioral safety processes. Safety Champion is a registered service mark of Quality Safety Edge.
Creating or being a Safety Champion is not easy. Quality Safety Edge recognizes those who have worked hard to create worldclass Behavioral Safety processes and become Safety Champions. We plan to celebrate new Safety Champions regularly.
Our most recent Safety Champion is Woody Hamilton at ENMAX Power Company of Calgary, Alberta. Woody works in the First Line Response department, with over 1600 employees, staffed "24/7" with 12 rotating shifts. Communicating about safety with that many people is a challenge, but one that Woody and his colleagues have solved through an innovative e-mail reminder system.
Another of our recent Safety Champions is Nora Buchholz, Safety Manager for Western Energy at The Rosebud Mine, near Colstrip, Montana. Implementing Values Based Safety® at a large surface coal mine has proven to be both incredibly challenging and rewarding for Nora. The mine operates 24-hours a day, with four rotating shifts of employees. Nora hopes that implementing the VBSP will continue to strengthen the trust between employees and management at the mine, since employee involvement is crucial. Says Nora, "if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem."
Donna Armstrong is a leader in the BSMART (Behavioral Safety Management and Recognition Techniques) process at Foster Wheeler. This Safety Champion is focused on one thing: improving the safety culture for her fellow employees.
Mary and Licia Lee are Safety Champions at Devon Energy Gas Services. The two are our first mother-and-daughter Safety Champions team. They share an hour commute to and from work, and often use this time to talk about how they can improve Devon's S.A.F.E. process and get more of their coworkers to participate.
In February 2003, we recognized Allen White, Safety Director for SMI Steel-SC, for his work in spearheading the “Others Reminding Others” Enhanced Safety Process, with the support of our own Dr. Judith Stowe.
Our Safety Champions in June 2002 were Jeff Olsson and Al Wolfram, working at Manitoba Hydro in Winnepeg. Jeff and Al are committed to a systematic and scientific approach to keeping Manitoba Hydro one of the safest utilities in Canada.
Our second Safety Champion is Scott Cook for his work with Chevron Canada Resources. Scott is now with Chevron Overseas Petroleum in Africa.
Our very first Safety Champion – Harold Brooks of Citgo's refinery in Lake Charles, LA.
Check back soon to see if someone you know is a Safety Champion!
